Tampa Bay Lindy Exchange Pictures
November 21-23, 2014

Many major cities host what's called a "lindy exchange". This is a weekend-long event consisting of multiple social dance events that cater to the lindy hop community. It's sort of like the dance version of one of my sci-fi conventions. I attended the Tampa Bay Lindy Exchange, or TBLX that held dance events in Tampa, St. Pete, and Clearwater, FL. This was its second year, coinciding with the Clearwater Jazz Classic to take advantage of some amazing live, danceable music in hotel ballrooms on the beach. There was late night dancing, blues dancing, old-timey jazz swing dancing, dancing on the beach in an outdoor pavillion, Cajun / Zydeco swing dancing, dance contests, meal meetups and Lindy Bombs (a lindy hop flash mob). It was one packed weekend with more than 30 hours of dancing in just 3 days! I heard some of the most amazing musicians I've ever heard at this event. Many times, the bands were so good, the dancers actually stopped dancing to concentrate on listening and watching the band!

I didn't bother to bring any cameras because I didn't want to try and keep track of it while it was left unattended as I danced. So all these pictures are taken with the crappy camera on my iPod, since I can wear that on my arm while I dance. Between the low lighting and the fast movement, the pictures are often blurry and with lots of artifacting. But at least I got some pictures at all! Plus, I got some videos, which you can see if you scroll down past the picture viewer.

Click on the thumbnails below to see larger images, or scroll through using the left & right arrrows, or hit the "play" button (the right-pointing triangle) to start the slideshow. Scroll down below the picture viewer to see videos.

Please let me know if your name is incorrect and/or you want a link to your website at your name, and I will fix it.

Video Playlist

This is a playlist of videos. You can select specific videos to watch by clicking on the word "playlist" with a bullet list icon at the upper-right of the playlist window, or hit the big "play" button in the middle to watch them all!

  • Video 1: Friday Memphis Speed Kings - Video of the Memphis Speed Kings.
  • Video 2: Saturday Sunset Pavillion 14 - Video of dancing at the Sunset Pavillion in Clearwater.
  • Video 3: Saturday Sunset Pavillion 15 - Video of the Shim Sham - a lindy hop line dance with no repeats! This means that, unlike country line dances that you're probably more familiar with, there is no segment of the choreography that repeats itself so the entire dance is one long choreographed dance. More info at Wikipedia and Streetswing.
  • Video 4: Memphis Speed Kings 01 - Video of Dave Bennet & The Memphis Speed Kings playing High School Hop at the Suncoast Jazz Classic in Clearwater.
  • Video 5: memphis Speed Kings 03 - Video of Dave Bennet & The Memphis Speed Kings playing Real Wild Child at the Suncoast Jazz Classic in Clearwater.
